TRAINING IT PROFESSIONALS
Motorbike & Classic Car Cruise
(photos below)
Our team organised a casual motorbike and classic car cruise (more bikes than cars turned up) for work collegues, friends and family on Sunday 15th November.
We started the run meeting up at Training IT Professionals on Walker street North Sydney, heading down towards the Southern Highlands picking up mates on the way through the Princess Highway until we arrived at the entrance to the Royal National Park.
We all enjoyed the run through the park to Stanwell Tops where there were more motorbikes than a motorbike show. We rested our sore behinds whilst overlooking the sea, watching people learn to tandem paraglide (although most of us prefer to have fun on dry land).
The 12 of us had a long lazy lunch at a local pub and then the group split with half turning back and the other half with two L plate riders in the mix, keen to ride on up the Macquarie By-Pass through Jamberoo to Robertson and then back the same way again.
Next time we will have an even larger group as a lot of mates and collegues couldn't make it. Blue Mountains anyone??

Real-Time Survey Conducted At VMworld Reveals Security Is A Primary Business Objective
- Wed, 01 Sep 2010 00:00:00 PDT

Survey Respondents Overwhelmingly Concur That They Are Moving Forward With Virtualization, but Security Concerns Run High
REDWOOD SHORES AND SUNNYVALE, CA — September 1, 2010 — Altor Networks, a leading innovator and provider of security for virtualized data centers and clouds, together with Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR), a leader in high-performance networking and an Altor partner for virtualized server and network security solutions, today announced the results of a jointly conducted survey at the VMworld show floor. The survey, which garnered responses from the representatives of over 200 firms at San Francisco's Moscone-hosted VMworld 2010, found over 77% of respondents have security intensive environments with over 90% of workloads requiring protection. Despite moving forward with virtualization, survey participants acknowledged they are mixing workloads of varying importance on the same virtual machine hosts and that their efforts to secure them would benefit greatly from solutions that bridge the gap between physical and virtual security. Over 70% of respondents are mixing workloads on the same hosts and well over a third believe that the best way to secure them is with solutions that unify physical and virtual network management constructs into a single view.
The survey participants were also asked about how often changes like VM additions or deletions take place in their virtual networks with over 55% reporting changes occurring multiple times a day. This rate of change far exceeds what is possible in a physical network and clearly points to the need for automation in the monitoring and controlling of virtualized network security and compliance.
Key findings of the survey include:
- 40% of respondents cite time to deployment and cost as leading considerations in the virtualization of their critical workloads.
- 86% of companies consolidate mixed workloads (e.g. Web, App, DB) and notice amplified security risks, as a result.
- 63% of respondents state that their virtual infrastructure administrators or network operations staff, not security, is responsible for security.
- 34% rank unified management for physical and virtual network security as the most important security concern in their virtual and cloud infrastructure.
"We're seeing the majority of enterprises virtualizing their mission-critical workloads concurrently with efforts to find the best way to secure them," said Johnnie Konstantas, vice president of marketing, Altor. "The survey reveals the real struggle of today's IT personnel to meet business objectives for increasing operational efficiency while maintaining or fortifying security. The responses are at times surprising in that they reveal workloads at great risk as a result of virtualization and organizations earnest in mitigating that risk as soon as possible."
"The survey results reflect the reality in today's IT environments: economic conditions are pushing organizations toward virtualizing ahead of risk mitigation considerations as a result of a cost cutting mindset," said Avishai Avivi, senior director, Strategic Alliances, Juniper Networks. "Our technology and integration efforts with Altor address a very imminent need to implement virtual network protections within a familiar and pervasive construct - the physical network security architecture. This is the fastest and safest way for organizations to ameliorate risk and virtualize comprehensively."
Altor and Juniper executives are available for interview at the Altor booth #1437 or interviews can be arranged by calling Leah McLean at (415) 308-7928.

Originally developed in collaboration with Ankeena Networks, which Juniper acquired in April 2010, the Media Flow Solution is part of the Junos Ready Software family.
"Content delivery is the service provider's primary revenue opportunity, and a CDN has to address that opportunity and mesh with the operations, network and cloud computing commitments that form the modern service layer," said Tom Nolle, founder and president of CIMI Corporation. "Media Flow's cloud-powered content delivery architecture is the only solution to abstract and virtualize content and resources at the same time, and to map them flexibly together. Juniper's Media Flow Solution makes the network into a content partner and gives service providers a new avenue for revenue generation while continuing to provide superior content delivery."
The foundation of the Media Flow Solution is Juniper Networks Media Flow Controller, a hierarchical caching software appliance that provides an awareness of content requirements, network conditions and storage infrastructure for optimal caching efficiency and performance. The Media Flow Solution also includes Juniper Networks Media Flow Manager, an element management application and the newly available VXA Series Media Flow Engines.
Media Flow Controller can be deployed on the VXA Series Media Flow Engines or on general purpose x86 servers. In either case, Media Flow Controller extracts high performance from the available hardware, enabling more enhanced scalability. This scalability enables customers to reduce the number of servers in their networks, thus reducing costs associated with power, space and cooling.

"In order to offer cloud-based business infrastructure services, it is critical to build a robust, highly reliable platform that can rapidly respond to demand," said Kazuhiro Tokita, executive managing officer of IIJ. "Our decision to adopt Juniper Networks switches as the networking component of the IIJ GIO platform was based on a number of factors including carrier-class performance and reliability, low cost of ownership, a migration path to 100 Gigabit Ethernet and—critically for cloud computing applications-simultaneous support for large numbers of VLANs."
Juniper Networks EX3200 fixed-configuration Ethernet switches are deployed at the network edge in IIJ's data centers, connecting large numbers of virtual LANs to the server and storage farms, with each device linked via Gigabit Ethernet to a pair of edge switches. Juniper's EX8200 chassis-based switches are at the core of the IIJ GIO data center networks, supporting redundant 10 Gigabit Ethernet links to the EX3200 switches and creating a highly resilient low-latency connection between the cloud's CPU/memory and storage resources.
The core switches also connect to Juniper Networks MX Series Universal Edge Routers, which IIJ has had in place for a number of years to support its high-performance backbone network. With Junos®, Juniper's single-source operating system, running across the data center switching and routing devices, IIJ is able to streamline cloud service provisioning so its customers can start using their selected environments less than 15 minutes after completing a contract.
"IIJ fully understands that simplifying and automating the data center network is critical to cloud computing," said Rene Link, vice president of service provider marketing, Juniper Networks. "Building the IIJ GIO service platform on a simplified two-layer network—without compromising performance—lowers IIJ's operational, capital and environmental costs while reducing complexity and improving efficiency. And with Junos running the network infrastructure, IIJ is in a position to increase efficiency even more through implementation of Junos Space applications."
Junos Space, running on top of the Junos operating system, is an open, extensible software platform for network automation that helps eliminate complexities, streamline operations, and improve management controls for a better network. Out-of- the-box and customized Junos Space applications, accessed through a web browser, can quickly and accurately manage tasks—such as provisioning—that would traditionally take a combination of staff, tools, time and money to achieve in a legacy data center.

BT Selects Juniper Networks MX Series for Global 21CN Deployment
- Tue, 03 Aug 2010 00:00:00 PDT

MX960 Universal Edge Router Chosen as Strategic Network Platform
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug 3, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today announced that BT plc, one of the world's leading providers of communication solutions and services, has chosen Juniper Networks MX Series Universal Edge Routers as a strategic Edge platform to support 21CN service deployment outside the UK.
"We chose Juniper's MX Series for the unprecedented scalability, performance and reliability it can deliver across the network as we introduce the final phases of our 21st century network," said George Nazi, president, 21CN Global Networks & Infrastructure, BT. "This will help enable us to serve customers and market sectors where throughput, reliability and resilience in the network infrastructure are non-negotiable. Juniper's vision focuses on the new network philosophy, which aligns perfectly with BT's objectives for 21CN, so this latest collaboration is a perfect fit."
To be deployed in BT's global core network to provide large scale Ethernet and high-speed MPLS VPN Services, the MX Series will also provide support for applications such as intranet and extranet multicast VPN for customers around the world. In addition, the MX960 will be used in the first of BT's edge network deployments, created specifically for the high-speed requirements of its global financial services customers. The MX960 will also be used in the U.K. as BT's major Internet Peering platform.
Powered by Junos® OS, the MX Series provides a consistent operating environment that streamlines network operations and improves the availability, performance, and security of all types of services supported at the Universal Edge. The MX960 Universal Edge Router is a high density Layer 2 and Layer 3 Ethernet platform designed for deployment in a number of enterprise and service provider Ethernet scenarios. The MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers recently received MEF 9/14 certification, surpassing the requirements of carrier-grade Ethernet switches as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum, making Juniper Networks routers the platforms of choice for service providers seeking 3D scaling in the Universal Edge.
"Service providers must balance the drive for greater bandwidth, scale and performance against the need to contain costs and complexity in the network," said Gert-Jan Schenk, senior vice president EMEA, Juniper Networks. "BT is investing in Junos at the heart of its network strategy, to achieve better performance at a lower total cost of ownership. This is a great example of the advancement of the economics of networking."

The annual accolade honors key customer-facing female business leaders within vendor channel organizations, distributors, and solution providers.
Grothjan and Cornmesser were selected by CRN for the positive impact their leadership, contributions and executive influence continue to have on the Juniper Partner community and the technology industry overall. Their individual team efforts, combined with Juniper's ongoing focus on technology innovation, partner profitability, business enablement, and total cost of ownership, have led to growth and success within the Juniper Partner community.
Further underscoring the networking leader's channel success, Grothjan and Cornmesser were also recognized as two of the elite CRN Power 100. This exclusive list honors the IT industry's top female channel executives who have reached the highest levels of the corporate ladder based on their professional achievements and influence wielded in the technology industry. This is the fourth consecutive year Grothjan has been named one of the IT industry's Top Women of the Channel and the first year for Cornmesser.
Grothjan is a seasoned channel executive with more than 20 years of experience. As vice president of global channel strategy, she plays a pivotal role in the planning and execution of Juniper's go-to-market strategy and is responsible for expanding Juniper's worldwide distribution footprint. Under her leadership, Juniper improved its inventory management system last year with the goal of strengthening its partnerships and enabling greater product availability on a global scale. Her team also worked closely with Channel Marketing to ensure the success of the enhanced Juniper J-Partner Program and introduced new product specializations in areas such as advanced security and advanced network infrastructure. With more than 16 years of channel experience, Cornmesser kicked off 2009 with the launch of Juniper's comprehensive managed service provider (MSP) program. Since its debut, the new program has resulted in 35 innovative offerings based on Juniper technology and available from Juniper Partners. In addition, Cornmesser spearheaded a number of new initiatives and resources designed to help Juniper Partners sell and market managed services to the enterprise more effectively. She continues to champion the success of Juniper's MSP efforts by accelerating the introduction of new and relevant managed services to the market in conjunction with Juniper partners.

Juniper Networks Positioned in Leaders Quadrant of Leading Analyst Firm's Network Access Control Magic Quadrant
- Wed, 21 Jul 2010 00:00:00 PDT

Evaluation Based on Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision
SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 21, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today announced it has been positioned in the "Leaders" quadrant of Gartner's recently published Magic Quadrant for Network Access Control.1 A leading worldwide IT research and advisory firm, Gartner evaluated vendors based on the company's ability to execute and completeness of vision in the Network Access Control market.
"Juniper understands that reliable, easy, and secure access — from anywhere — to the data and applications that drive a business is amongst the highest priorities of all IT and security managers. The diversity of the types of users and the types of devices corporations are trying to enable to connect is also increasing and this creates numerous challenges," said Sanjay Beri, vice president and general manager of the Access and Acceleration Business Unit at Juniper Networks. "We believe Juniper's positioning in the Leaders quadrant for our UAC product line reflects our ability to solve these network, data and application access needs. It is the combination of our granular and flexible policy management and enforcement, and a strong belief in open standards and support for intelligent, dynamic and scalable heterogeneous networks, that allows UAC and the Juniper portfolio to deliver robust network security and investment protection."

Zito Media Selects Juniper Networks to Expand Services and Extend Reach into New Markets
- Wed, 21 Jul 2010 00:00:00 PDT

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 21, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today announced Zito Media has selected Juniper's solutions to upgrade its network and develop a broadband infrastructure capable of serving underserved communities located in Zito's service areas of New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Ohio.
Zito selected Juniper Networks MX80 Universal Edge Routers powered by Junos® software to offer a multitude of advanced IP services, including VPLS, EPL, EVPL, IP transit and hosted VoIP solutions that provide easy management and cost savings for subscribers. The MX80 provides a unique solution that enables advanced MPLS/VPN functionality in a space-saving two rack unit form factor and will enable Zito to distribute video to cable markets.
"As we looked into upgrading our infrastructure to provide a multitude of advanced services, we needed a solution that would allow us to reach underserved communities," said Chad Gist, vice president of IP Networks, Zito Media. "Juniper's MX80 solution exceeded our expectations by offering a feature-rich platform at a very attractive price point."
Zito began the construction of this network through the interconnection of a number of small cable systems in rural Pennsylvania. Recently, Zito was awarded a federal grant by the Department of Commerce through its National Telecommunications and Information Administration's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP). This funding will allow Zito to expand its offering from the fifteen communities it currently serves to an additional eighteen communities. The Juniper Networks MX80 enables Zito to scale a 10 Gigabit IP/MPLS backbone as subscriber demand rises and offer a full range of IP services including voice, video, and data services to residential customers as well as businesses, hospitals, schools, public safety agencies and other community organizations.
"Zito is focused on leveraging next-generation networking technology to meet its mission of reaching underserved markets with a bevy of world class services," said Mike Marcellin, vice president of product marketing, Juniper Networks. "The MX80 provides a scalable solution that will ensure quality of service that will scale to meet demand as well as new revenue opportunities."
The MX80 is part of Juniper's family of MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers that enable the delivery of business, residential and mobile services at massive scale. The MX Series allow for network optimization for service providers and enterprises by speeding deployment of new services and reducing operational costs and complexity. Based on the Junos Trio chipset with revolutionary 3D Scaling technology, the MX 3D Universal Edge Routers enable quality of experience by processing two to four times more traffic than the competition — up to 2.6 terabits per second — while using half as much power per gigabit.
The MX80 was recently among the Best of Show Award winners at Interop Tokyo 2010. The MX80 received the grand prize in the Large Enterprise Networking Infrastructure category, maintaining Juniper's winning streak at the show stretching back to Interop Tokyo 2007.

New Network Integrating EX and MX Series across Junos® OS Simplifies Management, Improves Performance and Reduces Costs
SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 14, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today announced that Premier Media Group (PMG), Australia's leading sports producer and broadcaster, has deployed a "new network" running the Junos® operating system to increase program quality and deliver more high-definition content to its FOX SPORTS customers. Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet Switches installed in PMG's mobile production units and MX240 Universal Edge Routers located at its production center support high-capacity, low-latency IP connections that reduce transmission costs and enable back-end production processes to be streamlined.
PMG's FOX SPORTS broadcasts an average of 20 hours of live sports per day to 2.2 million Australian homes through the FOXTEL, AUSTAR and Optus subscription television services. High-definition production places heavy demands on contribution and production networks, which prompted PMG's move from point-to-point satellite links to a high-performance virtual private network, with Gigabit Ethernet fibre links, for transmitting live video footage from 16 major stadia around the country.
"These switches are installed in broadcast production vehicles that travel around the country, so we needed a solution that's very reliable — bomb proof," said Tony Scanlan, chief technology officer, Premier Media Group. "Like the EX4200 switches, Juniper's MX240 routers are very reliable and offer rock-solid performance. Additionally, with the Junos operating system running across all the Juniper devices, our staff no longer has to manage disparate network devices. Junos OS is very intuitive and has a centralized management platform that has simplified our processes and dramatically increased productivity."
PMG's high-performance network infrastructure deploys Juniper's Virtual Chassis fabric technology on the EX4200 Ethernet Switches, which eliminates the need for an aggregation layer — a primary source of complexity in the network. By enabling up to 10 interconnected switches to operate as a single logical device, the EX4200 switches with Virtual Chassis technology are ideal for outside broadcast applications as they offer the high-availability and reliability of a carrier-class system with the economics, flexibility and modest space requirements of stackable platforms. The EX4200 switches are installed in PMG's 12 outside broadcast units and hook up to its carrier's optical network interface at each stadium, enabling connection via the VPN to the Fox Sports TV center. Juniper Networks MX240 Ethernet Services Routers are deployed in a high-availability configuration at the Sydney center, which has also implemented the Juniper Networks Network and Security Manager (NSM).
"Live television broadcasting demands the highest network reliability and capacity with low latency and jitter," said Mike Banic, vice president of enterprise marketing for Juniper Networks. "The new network with a single-sourced Junos operating system increases reliability by eliminating complexities, streamlining operations and improving management controls for a better experience. The simplified new network architecture removes high latency and jitter to deliver a premium viewing experience for PMG's customers and reduces the company's capital and operational costs."
By establishing high-capacity, low-latency IP connections with guaranteed QoS to each venue, PMG has been able eliminate the need for heavy video compression, ensuring exceptional quality in the capture and transmission of fast-moving sports action. It also enables PMG to exploit full two-way communications between the various venues and the TV station, allowing match statistics, player profile information and other production and in-match information to be sent in real time to commentators during live broadcasts.

China Telecom Shanghai Goes Online with Juniper Networks TX Matrix Plus
- Wed, 30 Jun 2010 00:00:00 PDT

World's Most Flexible Multi-Chassis Routing System Supports World Expo City
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 30, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today announced that the Shanghai Branch of China Telecom Corporation (NYSE: CHA, HKEx: 728) has deployed its top-of-the-line multi-chassis routing system in a production environment. Implementation of the Juniper Networks TX Matrix Plus, interconnecting Juniper Networks T1600 Core Routers, provides China Telecom with an extremely stable and flexible platform to continue scaling the core of its super metro area network in Shanghai and to support Expo 2010, which is taking place in the city.
China Telecom has 3.5 million Shanghai broadband customers, including 1.2 million IPTV subscribers, and had been using Juniper Networks TX Matrix with three T640 Core Routers within its network there since 2006. With a continually increasing customer base and rising bandwidth demand in China's largest and most commercially important city, which has a population of more than 20 million, the company needed a core routing platform that would make it easier to continue scaling its metro area network services.
"The TX Matrix Plus system and T1600 Core Routers were designed to address some of the latest network engineering challenges faced by telecommunications service providers, and scaling broadband service in Shanghai is an example of such a challenge," said Luc Ceuppens, vice president of product marketing, Juniper Infrastructure Products Group. "Our core network solution scales in multiple dimensions — on the forwarding, control, and service planes - providing a reliable, high-performance, and flexible architecture that can carry a wide breadth of services over a common IP/MPLS infrastructure. That means China Telecom can continue to scale its Shanghai network and conform to stringent service-level agreements while minimizing both capital and operational expenditures."
The Juniper Networks TX Matrix Plus system underwent certification testing at China Telecom's Academy of Science & Technology in Guangzhou during the middle of 2009. And in October Juniper successfully staged a stringent proof-of-concept in Shanghai, leading to the decision to deploy the TX Matrix Plus by the end of the Q1 2010.
The systems are currently connected to network links — including OC768, OC192, OC48, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet ports. China Telecom can scale its Shanghai core network as needed with addition of more line cards — including Juniper Networks' new 100 Gigabit Ethernet interface.
The TX Matrix Plus leverages the superior technology of Juniper's T1600, the industry's highest capacity, most energy-efficient single-chassis core router. The T1600 and TX Matrix Plus lower total cost of ownership by delivering up to 25 percent more routing capacity in half the footprint, and with up to 40 percent less power than competing solutions available today. The TX Matrix Plus architecture supports up to 25 Tbps of throughput and 30 billion packets a second of forwarding capacity by integrating up to sixteen T1600s into a single multi-chassis routing node.

Juniper's EX Series Switches Enable TNZI to Expand Global Reach and Gain Competitive Edge
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 21, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today announced the first phase of a project to upgrade Telecom New Zealand International's (TNZI) global network and increase the number of international points of presence (POPs). By deploying Juniper Networks EX Series Ethernet Switches, the upgrade extends TNZI's global footprint in the delivery of internet telephony and increases the number of call minutes the telecommunications provider can carry and trade.
TNZI is a global internet telephony provider and trades with over 200 voice customers and vendors worldwide, carrying around two percent of all global voice traffic or nearly five billion minutes per year. Its legacy network didn't allow TNZI to cost-effectively expand into new geographies, limiting the scale of the network and the company's growth potential.
The company's new network, which deploys Juniper's Virtual Chassis fabric technology on the EX4200 Ethernet Switches, eliminates complexity and allows TNZI to cost-effectively expand capacity and geographic reach as its business grows. Juniper was selected for its value, strength of service and support, and the benefits provided by the single-source Junos® operating system. TNZI already uses Juniper Networks M Series Multiservice Edge Routers running the Junos OS in other areas of its network, making the EX4200 switches easy and seamless to integrate into the network operations center and existing management and reporting systems.
"In the global internet telephony market, the more points of presence you have, the better your ability to compete," said Anthony Briscoe, General Manager, TNZI. "For us to grow our business by increasing the number of minutes we carry, we needed to expand our footprint. Juniper Networks provided the most robust, scalable, secure and cost-effective infrastructure for us to be able to do just that."
Juniper Networks was also an attractive option for TNZI because of the security and common management attributes of its products, as well as the Virtual Chassis technology, which enables up to 10 interconnected EX4200 switches to operate as a single logical device. With Virtual Chassis technology, TNZI can expand their network and support incremental growth without requiring large upfront investments or overwhelming complexity. With Virtual Chassis fabric technology, Juniper delivers a highly scalable solution that boosts TNZI's network performance and can lower total cost of ownership.
"Ease of deployment and management were crucial to TNZI, combined with the quality, scale and security of a high-performance network infrastructure," said Andy Ingram, vice president of product marketing, Fabric and Switching Technologies, Juniper Networks. "Junos software provides a huge advantage in terms of simplified network operations. With a single-source operating system running across its switching and routing products, TNZI can build and maintain a truly open and secure network without the need to retrain its staff on a new OS. TNZI's new network eliminates layers of cost and complexity and allows the company to focus on service innovation."
The first EX Series-based POP is now live in London, while planning for the next few sites is underway. The success and ease of the first live deployment, combined with reduced per-port costs, has prompted TNZI to use Juniper's EX Series switches to replace legacy equipment at some of its existing POPs. This will further lower operational costs at each site while providing increased functionality and reliability.

From any location, end users simply supply their credentials and Junos Pulse ensures simple and secure access to corporate resources from any endpoint device. Building on the success of Juniper's SA Series SSL VPN appliances, Unified Access Control (UAC), and WXC Series Application Acceleration platform, Junos Pulse combines all of these capabilities and drastically improves the time and resource investments associated with global mobility deployments and overall economics involved in securing the 'new network'.
"To remain in step with the changing mobility needs of our clients, we have to ensure that that the products and services we offer address a broad range of mobile challenges," said Alex Cho, CTO, Nova Datacom. "Junos Pulse provides our customers an efficient, secure and cost-effective solution for today's organizations struggling to manage consistent security and user experience across a wide variety of devices, users, and locations."
Announced in May 2010 as part of the "dynamic security model" for the 21st century data center, Juniper's AppTrack software is also available today to help enterprises and service providers move beyond today's limited security architectures. Building on Juniper's AppSecure suite of security software, AppTrack software provides highly scalable application-level visibility for Juniper Networks SRX Series Services Gateways. AppTrack provides detailed information on application type and usage across the enterprise. Additionally, the software provides tight services integration that improves data flows and adds application identification information to the firewall session log.
"Paramount to the success of today's global organizations is the ability for authenticated, authorized users to seamlessly access all necessary applications – from any device, any location, and any resource," said Karim Toubba, vice president of Product Marketing, Service Layer Technology Business Group at Juniper Networks. "Ubiquitous data access has become a requirement for today's mobile workforce. Plain and simple, by incorporating Junos Pulse endpoint security or AppTrack Software for the SRX Series, 'new network' organizations are ensuring secure connectivity and increased network and application visibility enabling a better end-user experience."

Knight Frank Chooses Juniper Networks WXC and J Series for Australian Data Center Consolidation
- Tue, 15 Jun 2010 00:00:00 PDT

WAN Optimization and Secure Routing Solutions Deliver Multifold Performance and Productivity Improvements
AUSTRALIA, June 15, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today announced that global residential and commercial property consultancy Knight Frank has deployed Juniper application acceleration platforms and enterprise routers to boost operational efficiency and support its data center consolidation in Australia. Juniper Networks WX and WXC Application Acceleration platforms optimize Knight Frank's WAN infrastructure while J Series routers provide versatile, secure routing with low overhead and high reliability.
To reduce IT power, space and maintenance costs, Knight Frank consolidated its Australian IT infrastructure into two data centers, co-located with its service provider in Sydney and Melbourne. The data centers provide business applications and data to the company's 22 Australian offices, in addition to branch locations across Southeast Asia. With centralized infrastructure, efficient bandwidth utilization is crucial in ensuring acceptable application response times and the ability to back up data (via mirroring) between the two data centers.
"We initially considered purchasing more bandwidth to address bottlenecks since we use Citrix ICA, which is essentially a client/server application delivery architecture, to support key business functions," said Russell Proud, Knight Frank's National Infrastructure Manager. "We were, however, advised by Globalnet Solutions Australia, our system integrator, that Juniper Network's application acceleration platforms provided a superior and more cost-effective alternative.
"That's been borne out since deployment of the Juniper WX and WXC systems, with our optimized bandwidth yielding significant improvements in application responsiveness and traffic speed. We've achieved up to 12 times data compression and 25-fold improvement in Windows file server acceleration and application responsiveness. The Juniper solution has actually made it possible to support more users and network applications without adding more bandwidth."
Knight Frank deployed WXC Application Acceleration Platforms at the data centers and WX platforms at its branch locations. The data centers also operate the WX Central Management System to seamlessly manage the entire WAN optimization solution. Juniper's WX and WXC offer real-time acceleration of mission-critical applications and rich content by reducing the volume of traffic, including optimizing application protocols for delivery across the WAN.
In addition to many other innovative features, the WX and WXC utilize patented Molecular Sequence Reduction technology to eliminate redundant traffic and deliver up to a 10-fold increase in effective WAN capacity. Application Flow Acceleration technology also improves the WAN performance of specific applications and protocols – including Microsoft Exchange, Windows file services, and Web-based applications. The hard-drive capable WXC platforms also leverage Network Sequence Caching, a byte-level caching methodology which can eliminate redundant file transfers even when files are renamed at the operating system level.
"Distributed enterprises such as Knight Frank depend on responsive and reliable WAN infrastructure," said Shaun Page, vice president for Juniper Networks Australia and New Zealand. "Our acceleration and routing platforms deliver significant performance and availability improvements, enabling organizations to flexibly address the needs of remote sites and rapid business expansion, with reduced costs and improved value."
Knight Frank also deployed Juniper Networks J2320 modular routers at its branch locations and the higher-performance J2350 routers at its data centers. The J Series routers provide up to Gigabit Ethernet performance for enterprise remote, branch, and regional offices. They run the modular Junos operating system which offers many advanced services (MPLS, IPv6, QoS, multicast, and so forth) and security (stateful firewall and IPsec VPN) at no additional charge. The J Series routers ease deployment and reduce operational costs by integrating key branch location services such as routing, security, and IP telephony into one easy-to-operate platform.

Company Recognized for Outstanding Performance and Innovation by Association of Support Professionals
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 8, 2010 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) today announced that its Global Customer Support Web site, the Customer Support Center (CSC) has been recognized for a fifth consecutive year by the Association of Support Professionals (ASP) as one of the Ten Best Web Support Sites of 2010, a prestigious award showcasing excellence in online service and support. Juniper was also named to the ASP's Web Support Hall of Fame in 2009, which honors sites that have been named among the "Ten Best" for at least four years.
The award winners were selected by a panel of judges with expertise in Web support design and implementation, using a scoring system based on 25 separate performance criteria. The evaluation process considers overall usability, design, and navigation; knowledgebase and search implementation; interactive features; customer experience; and how companies addressed a major site development challenge. The ten winning sites will be profiled in a book called "The Ten Best Web Support Sites of 2010," to be published by the ASP in June 2010.
"There's clearly no sense of complacency at Juniper," said ASP executive director Jeffrey Tarter. "The company continues to invest serious resources and creative energy into their web support site, constantly finding new challenges to overcome." Juniper becomes the first and only company ever to earn five consecutive ASP Awards—an unprecedented industry accomplishment. No other networking company has ever earned more than two consecutive awards.
"Our CSC web support site handles almost two million individual requests for assistance every year," said Brad Kashani, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Customer Services. "For each and every one of those online support sessions, our desire is to enable our customers and partners to find the support information, answers, and tools that they need, the first time with an experience that is every bit as satisfying as if they called our technical assistance center. It's an honor to have the ASP recognize our work for an unprecedented fifth consecutive time in 2010. Any time that you are the first in the industry to accomplish something of this significance, it validates and differentiates your company's commitment and track record of customer success and satisfaction—and that is especially rewarding."

U.S. Defense Department Certifies Juniper Networks SSL VPN Appliances for Public Key Infrastructure Interoperability
- Thu, 27 May 2010 00:00:00 PDT

Increases Security by Eliminating Passwords via Common Access Card/PKI Solution
SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 27, 2010 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) today announced that its SA Series SSL VPN (Secured Sockets Layer Virtual Private Network) appliances have been tested and certified by the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) for interoperability with Defense Department Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) requirements. With these new certifications of SA4000 FIPS, SA4500 FIPS, SA6000 FIPS, and SA6500 FIPS SSL VPN Appliances, Juniper now offers its defense clients and partners a highly secure, Common Access Card-enabled solution for PKI networks serving growing numbers of government personnel.
JITC interoperability testing and certification are required by the U.S. Department of Defense for all IT equipment that attaches to U.S. defense networks.
Resembling an identity card, a Common Access Card (CAC) contains a computer chip, barcodes, and a magnetic stripe that enables access to buildings, controlled spaces, and computer networks, and allows users to digitally ‘sign' and encrypt emails. PKI is a public key cryptography system used by the U.S. Department of Defense to enable users of an unsecured public network (e.g., the Internet) to securely and privately exchange data, providing confidentiality and identity assurance for senders and recipients. PKI certificates are embedded into CACs to provide password-free access to secure networks. (The use of Personal Identity Verification [PIV] cards throughout the U.S. government was mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 in 2004.)
"Removing passwords—and their transmission across the Internet, as well as the organizational or cloud-based files where they are stored and managed—eliminates a huge vulnerability for managers of critical, sensitive networks," said Bob Fortna, vice president, Defense, Juniper Networks. "The use of a certified SSL VPN solution in a CAC-enabled PKI environment promotes highly secure network access, continuity of operations during emergencies, and offers significant reductions in inappropriate network use and intrusions."
Juniper Networks SA Series SSL VPN Appliances provide highly secure network access in tandem with comprehensive defenses against remote users and devices that can potentially harm the corporate network. The wide range of newly-certified models offers an SSL VPN security platform to serve the remote network access needs of agencies of any size, providing best-in-class endpoint security, granular access control, and threat prevention on a high-availability, scalable platform.
Juniper's SA Series solutions are among the most widely certified SSL VPN solutions in the world. In addition to these new JITC certifications, Juniper SSL VPN appliances are also certified in compliance with the requirements of Common Criteria EAL3+ and those of a variety of testing and certification labs. The SA6500 has been independently validated by Neohapsis Labs as one of the industry's most scalable SSL VPN appliances, able to sustain more than 10,000 concurrent user tunnels.
